Course Description
Start your career with the gold-standard in personal training certification. NASM is a distinguished name that will stand out to employers, help launch your fitness career, and grow your earning potential in this life-changing industry.
Prerequisites
To be eligible for this personal training course, you must have:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
You may enroll in the self-study course before having your CPR and AED certifications; however, you must have them before you take your exam.

Exam Details

Successful completion of the exam is required to become a Certified Personal Trainer.

You have 2 exam options:
Option 1. NASM Personal Trainer Certificate (Non-Proctored Exam)
This non-proctored and open-book exam has 100 questions and requires a passing grade of 70%. This exam is administered online only. You will have 3 hours to complete the exam, and you must take the exam within 180 days of your date of purchase.

Option 2. NASM-Certified Personal Trainer (NCCA Accredited Certification Exam)
The NCCA is a nationally recognized third-party agency that accredits certification programs which are able to meet and comply with its standards. The NCCA exam is a nationally accredited exam. This closed-book exam has 120 questions. You must pass with a scaled score of 70 or better. This proctored exam can be administered either in-person or online, and you will have 2 hours to complete the test. You must take this exam within 180 days of your date of purchase.

The choice is yours and selecting which exam to take will depend on your goals.

The NASM Certified Nutrition Coach program equips you with cutting-edge knowledge in nutrition science, coaching strategies, and behavior change. This isn’t about diets that fizzle—it’s about helping clients rewrite their relationship with food, make confident choices, and build healthy habits that last.
 
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course. However, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the many nutrition courses NASM has to offer to prepare for a career in nutrition.
 
Course Sections

Section 1: Nutritional Science
Build a strong foundation in nutrition. Understand the role of a coach, decode macronutrients, and explore hydration, micronutrients, and timing. Guide real-world choices around supplements and alcohol with evidence-based strategies.
Section 2: Behavior Change Strategies
Transform client habits. Use psychology and communication techniques to uncover motivations, set goals, and build lasting behavior change.
Section 3: Nutrition Coaching
Apply science to everyday life. Assess intake, interpret labels, and guide clients through diets, dining out, and plateaus. Help clients make informed choices and adopt sustainable nutrition habits that support their goals.

After completing the course, you will take a timed online exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. The exam must be completed within 90 minutes. To pass the exam, you must achieve a minimum score of 70%; if you do not, you have up to three attempts to reach this requirement.

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, it is recommended that candidates have at least one of the following credentials:

    • NASM CPT Certification

 

    • Bachelor’s degree in a health or fitness field

 

  • Accredited health and fitness certification or licensed certification/credential in a healthcare or wellness profession.

Section 1: Introduction to Corrective Exercise Training
Lay the foundation for smarter movement. Connect anatomy and the Human Movement System to strategies that reduce injury risk and improve performance.
Section 2: Corrective Exercise Techniques
Apply targeted techniques—release, stretch, activate, and integrate—to restore balance and support long-term function.
Section 3: Assessment
Pinpoint dysfunctions with posture, movement, and mobility assessments. Use insights to guide personalized corrective strategies.
Section 4: Programming Strategies
Design region-specific programs that improve alignment, stability, and recovery. Help clients move better, longer, and stronger.
